Representative example: 1875 Three Dollar Gold (Proof Only)

Proof three-dollar gold pieces were made for collectors throughout the series and are rare for every date. The earliest (1854–1858) are extraordinary rarities, with estimated mintages of only 4 to 12 pieces each; even after the Mint began recording Proof mintages in 1859, most early strikings went unsold and were melted. Mintages stayed in the 20–50 range for two decades before climbing into three figures in the later 1880s.

Key facts

Two dates — the 1875 and 1876 — are Proof-only (no business strikes), and they command strong premiums, especially the 1875. The 1873 Open 3 is a Proof variety distinct from the circulation Closed 3. Most certified Proofs grade PR-63 to PR-65; higher grades and cameo/deep-cameo coins are scarce and valuable.
