Representative example: 1792 Half Disme

The half dime — a silver five-cent coin — is one of the most historic of all United States denominations. It was one of the ten denominations authorized by the Mint Act of 1792, and the romantic 1792 half disme is considered by many to be the first coin struck by the fledgling United States. Regular coinage began with the Flowing Hair design in 1794.

Production was sporadic early on, with none struck between 1805 and 1829, after which half dimes were made continuously through 1873. The designs mirror the larger silver coins, with the Capped Bust type giving way to Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Seated motif in 1837. The denomination was ended by the Coinage Act of 1873 in favor of the copper-nickel five-cent piece introduced in 1866.
