Answers to the questions we hear most from coin buyers and sellers.
What coins do you buy?
We buy virtually all U.S. coins — half cents and large cents, small cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, Morgan and Peace silver dollars, gold coins from the gold dollar through $20 Double Eagles, commemoratives, and bullion. We also buy tokens, medals, and So-Called Dollars, as well as world and ancient coins. We are happy to purchase a single rare coin or an entire collection.
How fast do you pay?
Quickly. Once you accept our offer and we have received and verified your coins, we issue payment promptly — typically by check or bank wire. For larger or time-sensitive sales we are glad to discuss expedited or advance payment. There is never any pressure or obligation to sell.
How do I find out what my coin is worth?
Send us a few photos or a simple inventory list (year, mintmark, and denomination is a great start) by email at info@coinappraiser.com, or call us at 888-707-1564. One of our coin experts will review it and reply with a value and, if you’d like, our best offer. You can also browse our coin value guide for pictures and prices on thousands of U.S. coins.
How do I sell my coins to you?
It’s simple: (1) send us a description, inventory list, or photos; (2) we establish current value and send you a written, no-obligation offer; and (3) if you accept, we arrange safe, insured shipping and prompt payment. If you’d rather sell at auction or need a formal appraisal, we can help with that too.
Do you charge a fee to look at my coins or make an offer?
No. Reviewing your coins, telling you what you have, and making an offer are always free and carry no obligation. If we handle grading on your behalf, we charge only the grading service’s exact discounted cost — never a markup for our time.
Do I have to sell if I get an offer?
No. Every offer is free and with no obligation. Many people contact us simply to learn what they have — we’re happy to tell you, whether or not you decide to sell.
Should I get my coin graded by PCGS or NGC before selling?
Not always. Grading (certification) makes sense only when the value it adds is greater than the cost of grading. Common coins usually aren’t worth the fee, while high-grade or rare coins often are. We grade tens of thousands of coins a year, so we can advise whether grading is worth it — and, because of our volume, we get better rates and faster turnaround than the average submitter.
What are PCGS and NGC?
PCGS and NGC are the two most trusted independent, third-party coin grading services. They examine a coin in person and assign it a numerical grade from 1 to 70 based on condition, then seal it in a tamper-evident holder. A trusted grade lets buyers and sellers agree on value with confidence.
Do you buy gold and silver bullion coins?
Yes. We buy American Gold and Silver Eagles, Gold Buffalos, Platinum Eagles, and other modern bullion, as well as classic gold and silver coins valued for their precious-metal content. Knowing the current spot price of gold and silver helps you understand how common bullion-type coins are valued.
Do you buy tokens, medals, and So-Called Dollars?
Yes. We buy Betts medals, Hard Times and Civil War tokens, merchant and store-card tokens, patriotic tokens, and So-Called Dollars, among other exonumia. Send photos and we’ll let you know what you have.
Do you buy world and ancient coins?
Yes. Our experts handle world and ancient coinage — Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and modern world coins — in addition to U.S. issues. If you have foreign or ancient material, contact us for an evaluation.
Is it safe to ship my coins to you?
Yes. When you accept an offer we walk you through safe, fully insured shipping so your coins are protected in transit. If you’d prefer, you can also visit a Stack’s Bowers location in person.
What if you’re not the best buyer for my coins?
We’ll tell you. We buy and sell millions of dollars of coins each year, but we aren’t always the ideal buyer for every item. When we feel there’s a better or more logical buyer, we’ll refer you — free of charge. Our goal is to help you get the most for your coins.
Can you sell my coins at auction?
Yes. As a Stack’s Bowers affiliate, we can advise whether your coins are better sold directly or consigned to a major auction, and we’ll tell you what they’re likely to bring. Auctions can be ideal for rare, high-grade, or “fresh” coins that benefit from competitive bidding.
Do you provide formal appraisals?
Yes. While most people just want a value or an offer, we do provide detailed, IRS-compliant appraisals when you need one — for estates, insurance, or tax purposes. One of our experts will review your collection and document it thoroughly.
Who will I be working with?
