Representative example: 1792 Half Disme

The 1792 half disme (pronounced “deem”) is one of the most romantic issues in American numismatics. President George Washington referred to it in his November 1792 address as “a small beginning in the coinage of half dimes,” and many numismatists regard it as the first coin struck by the United States — although the Red Book still lists it among patterns. Roughly 1,500 or more were made, and most entered circulation.

Key facts

Approximately 100 to 200 examples are believed to survive, nearly all well worn, with only a handful of Uncirculated pieces certified. Whatever its technical status, the 1792 half disme is a cornerstone of any advanced half dime or early-American collection.
