History, Information, and Value of 1871 U.S. Assay Commission Medal

Value of 1871 U.S. Assay Commission Medal

This medal displays Archimedes, standing in an arched doorway. To the left of him rests a bathtub, which symbolizes his discovery of specific gravity and displacement for previous medals. This medal lacks the director’s name in exergue. The reverse displays an intricately leafy wreath. In the center of the wreath states, “Annual Assay 1871”. Twenty-four cases of medals were purchased by the medal department, indicating that number of silver medals were created. This medal was likely rejected due to the director preferring the similiar medal that included his name in exergue.
