The Matron Head (Coronet) cent began in 1816, opening the “late date” large cent era. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY with her hair in a bun, surrounded by thirteen stars; the reverse keeps the continuous wreath around ONE CENT. This obverse was used only on cents (no half-cent counterpart). Late-date collectors attribute these by Newcomb number.

There are no great date rarities, but the 1823 is the most elusive date and the 1821 is scarce (and oddly, 1821 is the most available early Proof). The celebrated 1817 “15 Stars” variety and several overdates (1819/8, 1820/19, 1823/2, 1824/2) are collector favorites. Mint State coins after 1820 are genuinely rare, but 1816–1820 (especially 1818 and 1820) survive in Uncirculated grade thanks to the famous Randall Hoard — look for original, uncleaned brown surfaces.
We actively buy Matron Head cents in every grade, from well-worn type coins to the key 1823, the 1817 15-Stars, overdates, and original Randall Hoard Mint State pieces. Send photos for a free, no-obligation offer.
