Representative example: 1839 Silly Head Cent

This transitional group (1835–1839) covers several restyled obverse hubs between the Matron Head and the Braided Hair types, now credited to Christian Gobrecht. Liberty still faces left with her hair in a bun and LIBERTY on a coronet, within thirteen stars; the reverse keeps the continuous wreath around ONE CENT. Collectors catalog these by their distinctive obverse styles.

Key facts

The era is famous for its named varieties: the “Head of 1838,” the beaded-vs-plain hair cords, and the eagerly collected 1839 “Silly Head” and 1839 “Booby Head.” The 1839/6 overdate is especially interesting — it re-dates an 1836 die (plain hair cords), so it isn’t the same design as the other 1839 cents. Most dates are available Fair through AU; 1838 is the most common and the easiest in Mint State (usually glossy brown), while superb Uncirculated coins are rare.
