The Presidential dollar program honored U.S. presidents in order of service, four designs per year from 2007 through 2011, continuing as collector-only issues through 2016, with a final 2020 coin for George H.W. Bush. Each obverse carries a presidential portrait; the reverse shows the Statue of Liberty. The date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM were placed on the edge — the first regularly inscribed-edge U.S. circulating coins in modern times.

Circulation coins from Philadelphia and Denver are common and generally worth face value in average condition; after 2011 the coins were struck only for collectors (lower mintages) and sold at a premium. The best-known collectibles are error and variety coins — above all the first-year 2007 George Washington “missing edge lettering” dollars (nicknamed “Godless dollars”), plus other missing- and doubled-edge-lettering errors — and high-grade (MS/PR 69–70) examples and complete sets.
