Representative example: 1878-CC Trade Dollar

The Trade dollar, designed by William Barber, was introduced in 1873 to compete with the Mexican dollar in Asian commerce. At 420 grains it is slightly heavier than a standard silver dollar and was intended mainly for export. The obverse shows Liberty seated on a bale of merchandise facing the sea; the reverse carries an eagle with the weight and fineness (420 GRAINS, 900 FINE) spelled out.

Key facts

Many Trade dollars that circulated in Asia carry chopmarks — Oriental characters punched by merchants and bankers to vouch for the silver; these are collectible in their own right. Business strikes are available from Fine through About Uncirculated; Mint State coins are scarce and superb examples rare.

The great rarities are the proof-only 1884 (10 known) and 1885 (5 known) — two of the most famous U.S. coins. Key Carson City dates include the 1878-CC and 1875-CC.
