Proof two-cent pieces were struck for collectors each year from 1864 through 1873. Because no business strikes were made in 1873, a Proof is required to complete a date set of the denomination — which has always placed extra demand on the Proof-only issue.

The 1864 Small Motto is a major rarity in Proof, with perhaps fewer than two dozen known. The Proof-only 1873 comes with a Close 3 and an Open 3. As with the series generally, many “brilliant” coins have been cleaned; original, lightly toned Proofs are the ones to seek.
