The 1856 Flying Eagle cent is the famous key to the series. It was struck as a pattern — roughly 600 to 800 pieces were made for distribution to congressmen and other influential people to help win approval of the new small-cent format — so it was never a regular circulating issue, yet collectors have always “adopted” it into the set. Most survivors are Proofs or restrikes made in 1859–1860; genuine Uncirculated originals trace to the original striking and are extremely rare. Because a Flying Eagle set is considered incomplete without it, the 1856 commands strong prices in every grade.
