The 1792 half disme (pronounced “deem”) is one of the most romantic issues in American numismatics. President George Washington referred to it in his November 1792 address as “a small beginning in the coinage of half dimes,” and many numismatists regard it as the first coin struck by the United States — although the Red Book still lists it among patterns. Roughly 1,500 or more were made, and most entered circulation.
