Representative example: 1793 Flowing Hair Wreath Cent

The Wreath cent was the second cent design of 1793, replacing the short-lived Chain cent. The obverse shows a restyled Liberty in higher relief with more detailed hair and a small sprig above the date; the reverse places ONE CENT and the fraction 1/100 inside an open wreath tied with a bow. High protective rims mean even worn Wreath cents usually show the date and major features.

Key facts

The Wreath cent is the most available of the three 1793 types, though scarce in all grades — perhaps one to two thousand survive across many Sheldon die varieties, most in Good to Fine (often with some surface porosity from the era’s varied copper). Extremely Fine and AU coins are elusive and Mint State pieces are major rarities. The famous Strawberry Leaf variety (a clover-like leaf spray in place of the usual sprig) is exceedingly rare, with only a handful known in low grades.
