History, Information, and Value of 1833 Classic Head Half Cent
Value of 1833 C-1 Classic Head Half Cent
W-1 | C-1, B-1 | Breen dies: 1-A. | An estimated 3,500 to 5,000 or so 1833 Classic Head Half Cents can be accounted for today with W-1 the only die pairing for the date; this reverse was reused for all 1834 half cents as well as some dated 1835. Available in all grades up to and including Mint State; some high-grade coins are prooflike. Perhaps 25 to 50 Proofs of the date are extant. In the 1930s the Guttag Brothers of New York City purchased a hoard of 1833 half cents that may have contained well over 1,000 pieces, perhaps even twice that figure. These were distributed over the course of several years and were finally gone by the mid-1950s; many of them sold for just a quarter apiece in the 1930s! This coin was minted at the Old Philadelphia Mint.
The text on the obverse of the coin reads “Liberty, 1833” and the reverse text on the Classic Head Half Cent reads “United States of America, Half Cent.” The obverse of the coin shows a womans bust facing the left with 13 stars surrounding her head and the date below. The reverse shows a full wreath surrounding the text in the center. These coins come in many varieties, so we recommend contacting one of our rare coin experts.
