The Small Letters variety of the 1858 Flying Eagle cent shows narrower, more widely spaced lettering in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the obverse. Like its Large Letters counterpart it is collectible in all grades — common when circulated and more elusive in high Mint State. Together the two 1858 varieties account for a reported 24,600,000 pieces, the final year of the Flying Eagle design.
