Value of 1908-S St. Gaudens $20 Gold

This is an exceptionally well-produced double eagle that almost always displays full striking detail and very good to excellent luster. There are two different finishes known; most examples are softly frosted in texture but a few display satiny luster. The typical Mint State survivor is moderately to heavily abraded.

The 1908-S St. Gaudens has the lowest mintage of any circulation strike Saint-Gaudens double eagle. It is also one of the few issues of this type that is seen more often in circulated grades than in Mint State. The 1908-S is rare in all Mint State grades with most such survivors confined to the MS-60 to MS-64 range. Gems are very rare, although there are a few particularly impressive pieces that have been certified MS-67 by either PCGS or NGC. One of the PCGS coins is the Norweb specimen that appeared as lot 4090 in Bowers and Merenas November 1988 sale of that important collection.
