The 1955 Doubled Die Obverse is one of the most famous and dramatic error coins in American numismatics. A misalignment in the die-hubbing process produced bold, unmistakable doubling in the date and in the words LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. An estimated 40,000 entered circulation — many in cigarette-vending change in the Northeast — and perhaps 3,000 to 4,000 survive across all grades. The doubling is visible to the naked eye; beware of lesser “machine doubling” and strike doubling, which are common and far less valuable. Genuine examples are highly sought after in every grade.
